Severe Weather to Start the Week for Much of Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

The mass of hot and humid air that has taken up residence throughout much of the East Coast over the last few days is going to serve as the impetus for severe weather to start the work week. A cold front moving in from the west will merge with the existing muggy air to trigger the development of stormy conditions on Monday through the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic.

Storms to Disrupt Start to Week Out East

The storms that brought rain and storms to the nation’s mid-section to end the weekend are shifting to the east on Monday. The day will likely start on a peaceful note before storms take root in the afternoon hours. The potential of storms will cover a large swath of land stretching from North Carolina, up through the mid-Atlantic, and as far northward as southern New England.

The weather maker will produce a number of potential hazards, including heavy downpours, large hail, and damaging winds. While the line of storms will likely impact millions, the highest chance of significant disruptions will be in an area stretching from Northern Virginia, through Pennsylvania and Delaware, and into New York City. This will put populated areas such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia in the line of fire.

Damaging Winds and Twisters Possible With This Storm System

The greatest risk with this series of storms will be the strong winds. The hardest-hit areas may see gusts measuring up to 70 mph during the late afternoon and early evening hours. The timing of the storms may impact the afternoon commute. The strong winds have the potential of causing power outages at the hands of downed trees and power lines. Winds may also make it challenging for high-profile vehicles on the roadways.

An influx of energy through the jet stream will also raise the risk of tornadic activity with some of the strongest storms. Although the system did not bring twisters when it was positioned over the nation’s heartland this weekend, the ingredients will be in place to trigger tornado formation as it moves to the east.

Looking Ahead to Tuesday and Wednesday

Cooler air will expand across the region on Tuesday as the cold front pushes to the east. This air will also feel markedly less humid than the conditions that have characterized the last few days.

The mercury will plummet throughout the Northeast and New England on Tuesday after seeing unseasonably warm weather on Monday. For example, after seeing a high temperature in the low 80s on Monday, the readings will be back in the low 70s for Tuesday for Boston. Areas such as Providence, Rhode Island will also see a shift downward in the temperature between Monday and Tuesday.

The near average or below normal temperatures for the bulk of the Northeast will stay in place through at least Wednesday. Residents will also notice far less humidity in place with the arrival of the cold front.

Forecasters say that another change in the jet stream toward the end of the week will likely usher in warmer temperatures once again.
