Cold Front Pushes Through Dramatic Weather Change for the Northeast This Weekend

It is time to turn off the air conditioner in the Northeast. Temperatures are set to plummet up to 30 degrees across the region this weekend as a cold front pushes through and erases the summer like heat that has been the story for most of the week.

Here is how cool you can expect it to get in this corner of the country in the coming days.

Mercury Forecast to Drop Significantly on Saturday

The start of the meteorological summer on June 1 felt more like the middle of summer in most parts of the Northeast and New England. The mercury soared into the mid 90s in areas as far north as Burlington, Vermont.

While Friday brought another day of near-record temperatures, the arrival of a cold front has changed the weather situation just in time for the weekend.

You can expect the daily high readings to fall from the 80s into the 50s in parts of New England and beyond by Saturday. New England will see the falling temperatures first as the cold front moves in a southwestward direction into the mid-Atlantic.

This backdoor front will feel like quite a change for people who had been basking in the unseasonably warm temperatures over the last few days.

The coastal areas of the region will experience the greatest degree of temperature change. For instance, Boston will fall from the 80s on Friday to the 50s for a high by Saturday. This cool weather will be heightened by the chilly winds coming off of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cool Air Mass to Linger

This surge of cool air is forecast to stick around for a few days with temperatures hovering in the low 60s in the coastal areas through the middle of next week. Temperature readings will also remain on the cool side moving inland.

For instance, New York City will drop from a high of about 90 degrees on Friday to a high of just 68 degrees on Saturday. Temperatures will bounce back and forth between the 60s and 70s through next week.

The temperature shift will not be quite as noticeable heading to the south into the mid-Atlantic. After seeing readings in the low 90s on Friday, Washington, D.C. will still land in the low 80s on Saturday before dropping into the upper 70s on Sunday. The mercury will then climb back into the 80s to start the new work week in the nation’s capital.

Rain in the Forecast but Will it Be Enough to Help Growing Drought Conditions?

Forecasters are also warning that the cold front will usher in a chance of rain showers and thunderstorms for a large region through Saturday. Some of these storms could pack strong winds and bouts of heavy rain at times.

Be sure to check the local forecast in advance of any outdoor plans. The sporadic nature of these storms could mean that they come on suddenly with little warning.

A deep dip in the jet stream will produce an ongoing chance of moisture throughout the week for the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic. However, the rain will be extremely hit and miss with some areas missing out completely on any precipitation.

This is not good news for a part of the country that is diving deeper into drought territory. Thursday’s data release from the U.S. Drought Monitor indicates a large area of abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions in the northeastern corner of the nation thanks to record dry conditions in May.

Unfortunately, the long-range forecast is not showing much promise for significant chances of rain.
