February’s Full Snow Moon Will Appear in the Night Sky this Weekend

The weekend of February 27 is a significant one. Not only is the month almost over, but it is also time to get ready for a rare weather event: a snow moon sighting. So, what is this event, exactly? As the Native Americans who live in the Northeast referenced when they named this occurrence, February is a snowy month. Thus, when tribes used months to keep track of which season it was, they called February’s full version a ‘snow’ one to mark the typically weather pattern. This is makes sense, as even the National Weather Service notes that February is typically marked in the U.S. with heavy, consistent snow.

Last week brought snow to much of the country, including areas such as Texas, which do not usually experience snow. While there has been less wintry weather this week nationwide, about a third of the U.S. still has snow on the ground, so it is well named. To some, this is also known as a ‘hunger moon’ as it was traditionally difficult for tribes to find food in this cold, dark month.

According to the website EarthSky.com, roughly every 19 years, there is no full version that occurs in February. Take advantage of this special winter weather event and go see it for yourself. See, there are good parts of February, aside from eating all the chocolate on Valentine’s Day!

Where and when can I see this phenomenon occur?

The snow form will rise in the eastern part of the country on the night of February 26. After it crosses the sky during the night, it will set in the west during the wee hours of February 27. Note that it will officially become full at approximately 3:19 a.m. EST on Saturday. Sure, you might miss some sleep to catch it, but this beautiful occurrence is one to watch, especially if astrology is of the utmost importance to you.
