Mild Weekend on Tap for the Northeast in Advance of Approaching Weather Maker

While the weekend is predicted to be relatively tranquil in the Northeast, you cannot expect these calm conditions to last through the Halloween holiday on Monday.

Pleasant Weekend on Tap for Northeast

A storm that is churning off the coast of the Eastern Seaboard will remain at sea with impacts limited to rough surf and strong winds in the mid-Atlantic coastal area and stretching up to New England. However, you will find pleasant conditions if you travel far enough inland. This will be a good time to plan one last trip to check out the fall foliage or to indulge in some seasonal fun at the pumpkin patch. Sunny skies and moderate temperatures will be the norm in the interior portions of the Northeast.

The storm brewing off the coast will pair with an area of high pressure anchored over New England to create northeasterly winds stretching up and down the Atlantic Seaboard from Massachusetts down into the northeastern corner of Florida. It is probably not an ideal time to take a jog along the beach or head out into the warmer waters farther to the south.

In addition to the winds, the rough surf and minor beach erosion will make it a dangerous situation for swimmers. This stretch of coastline can also expect some minor coastal flooding during high tide with levels predicted to land about 1 – 2 feet above normal.

The wind and coastal flooding will back off later in the weekend with Sunday being the calmer day of the weekend. Earlier in the week, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) had been worried that the storm moving to the southwest of Bermuda could take on tropical characteristics. That window of opportunity has been missed as the system is likely to move into an area of greater winder shear in the coming hours and days, causing it to break apart and lose intensity.

That said, the disturbance will still deliver showers and locally heavy storms to Bermuda and beyond over the weekend. Forecasters are now keeping a close eye on a disturbance located about 1,500 miles to the south of Bermuda in the Caribbean Sea.

Enjoy the Nice Weather in the Northeast While You Can

Unfortunately for trick-or-treaters, this nice weather is not expected to hang on through the Halloween holiday. The storm system that brought heavy rain to the southern Plains on Thursday and Friday and the Gulf Coast for the early part of the weekend is moving to the Northeast. Although it will run out of steam, it will still pack enough moisture to deliver light rain to the Northeast on Monday.

It will be the Appalachians, the Ohio Valley, and the Piedmont region that see rain on Sunday night. The precipitation will hit the mid-Atlantic and New England by Halloween. In addition to putting a damper on trick-or-treating plans, the weather maker may also snarl traffic throughout the day. It could be a drizzly game of the World Series when the Philadelphia Phillies host the Houston Astros. Be sure to check the hourly forecast before heading out for the game to know how to dress.

Tuesday is shaping up to be a drier day for the region as the system departs.
