Heavy Rain, Flooding, and Chance of Severe Weather Staring Down the Southern U.S.

It is going to be another pleasant weekend in the Northeast thanks to a surge of above-normal temperatures up and down the Atlantic Seaboard. Some records may also fall as the mercury starts its upward trajectory.
The warmup will be on the heels of a northward bulge in the jet stream that ushers in unseasonably high temperatures. This jet stream movement will combine with an abundance of sunshine to send the temperature climbing just in time for the first weekend of November.
While the beginning of the week brought sporadic rain showers for this corner of the country, the temperature has remained fairly warm for this time of the year. These temperatures are forecast to hang on through the weekend in cities such as Boston and New York City.
For instance, Sunday’s predicted high for Philadelphia will soar into the upper 70s, readings more reminiscent of late spring than the middle of the fall. Should the southerly winds pick up as expected, the temperature may inch even higher. The record for this day in history of 79 degrees is in danger of falling.
New York City will also see temperatures in the 70s by Sunday. The record for the Big Apple for November 6 is 74 degrees, making it likely that this reading may be in reach. The slight chance of a rain shower thanks to the arrival of a cold front may keep the record in place.
Although the clouds will roll in on Sunday for Boston, the temperatures will remain in the low to mid 70s. The record for this day is 73 degrees.
It will be even warmer moving farther inland. For instance, Pittsburgh is predicted to hit a high of 78 degrees on Saturday despite the presence of clouds. While the record of 82 degrees from 1961 may be out of reach, it will still feel unusually warm for the first weekend of November.
Even the overnight lows will hover above normal. A higher starting point to begin the day will make it more likely that daily records are broken during this stretch of warm weather. The potential of record-breaking temperatures will extend well into northern New England by Sunday.
Friday and Saturday will bring mostly sunny skies with the exception of a few high clouds. Because so many trees have already lost their foliage, the sunshine will have an easier time heating up the air temperature.
The clouds will begin to build on Sunday as a cold front slides into the region. This front will also increase the odds of rain in an area stretching from Maryland and West Virginia, up through Pennsylvania, and into the southern portions of New England. The presence of clouds may bring the temperature down slightly in this inland area, however, the mercury is predicted to remain elevated throughout the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor.
The cold front is forecast to break up by Monday, keeping the warm readings in place to start the week. The above average temperatures are expected to continue throughout the next week. However, you can also expect to see a greater chance of rain in the Northeast as a tropical disturbance forming off the coast of the Southeast could migrate to the north.
It is still too early to tell if this surge of moisture will take on tropical characteristics. Even if the feature does not deliver significant rain or wind, it could still churn up the seas and trigger rough surf conditions as far as New England. The strong winds building in the east could also enhance the odds of coastal flooding due to these environmental conditions.
Despite this uncertainty, the bottom line is that the region is in line for a relatively nice start to November.
