Drier Weather in Store for the Atlantic Seaboard to Start the New Week

Confetti may not be the only thing falling from the sky in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Revelers headed out to participate in the annual tradition of the ball drop will also be dealing with falling rain. Here is a peak at the forecast for the festivities.

Rain in the Forecast for Times Square Ball Drop

The good news for the hordes of people expected to crowd into Times Square to ring in the new year is that the temperatures are forecast to be above normal for this time of the year. However, the warmer weather will pair with a solid chance of rain to put a damper on the iconic moment.

It has been a wacky week of weather for this part of the country. The high temperature on Christmas Day in New York City only hit 28 degrees, about 15 degrees below normal for this date on the calendar. A mass of warmer air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico will bring the mercury up to about 30 degrees higher than what the region saw over the Christmas weekend.

Saturday’s readings will be similar to the mild conditions that the Big Apple enjoyed last year when it hit 55 degrees on New Year’s Eve and inched up to 56 degrees for the first day of 2022. While the temperatures will fall short of the record set in 1965, it may still feel downright balmy when compared to the Arctic weather of last week.

Steadier Rain Later in the Day

Forecasters are predicting that the temperature will hover in the low 50s when the clock strikes midnight. The mild air will also usher in a surge of moisture. The current forecast predicts that the day will begin dry, however, rain is a strong possibility as the evening progresses in Times Square.

What will begin as spotty showers will gradually build to a steady rain. You can expect to wake up to lingering rain on Sunday morning. Drier air is predicted to push into the city and its environs by the afternoon hours on New Year’s Day. This will likely be the best chance to get outside and take advantage of the mild temperatures.

The rain will then track into New England by Sunday, however, the moisture will be short-lived with drier air settling in to start the new work week.

Local officials are recommending that people dress for wet weather when heading out to Times Square. Waterproof shoes and a jacket are essential items. It is also a good idea to dress in layers.

Travelers will be happy to see favorable conditions along the Interstate 95 corridor on Monday. A mass of high pressure is forecast to build along the Eastern Seaboard, bringing a string of dry days to the region.
