Snow, Ice, and Freezing Rain a Possibility for Portions of New England and Beyond

Travelers taking to the roads and skies across the Northeast this week will want to pay attention to the developing forecast. An infusion of cold air late Wednesday and into Thursday will pave the way for winter weather to develop across the region in the coming days. Here is what you need to know about this potentially troublesome forecast.

One More Day of Warmer Than Typical Temperatures for the Northeast Before Colder Air Arrives

The arrival of a cold air mass will support the development of periods of snow, sleet, and freezing rain in some areas of New England and down into upstate New York beginning late Wednesday and lasting through Thursday. Tuesday’s weather will likely just bring the chance of rain as the temperatures will remain on the warm side for one more day.

It has been a fairly warm fall for much of the East Coast. This trend will linger on Tuesday as residents in the Northeast, the mid-Atlantic, and the Southeast head to the polls on Election Day. This moderate weather pattern will come to an end as a storm moves to the east along the border of the northern U.S. and Canada. This weather maker will push colder air to the south late Tuesday.

Behind the storm, a cold front will usher in an area of thick clouds and rain showers for the Northeast. While this rain will not be steady in nature, sporadic showers could put a damper on the weather on Tuesday.

The Tuesday storm will be an appetizer for a much colder and stronger system that will push to the south later in the week. This is the weather maker that will come with the colder temperature readings needed to create wintry precipitation.

Residents in central and northern New England as well as northern New York should be prepared for temperatures to drop to the freezing level on Tuesday night. These readings will have a difficult time rebounding throughout the day Wednesday. Even colder temperatures Wednesday night will provide the chance of snow, sleet, and freezing rain overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

This storm is not expected to pack a lot of moisture, resulting in only minimal snow and ice accumulations. However, the first wintry weather event of the season always comes with the risk of slippery roads. Be sure to take the time to review safe winter weather driving techniques before the first batch of snow and ice arrives to your community.

Who Can Expect the Dose of Wintry Precipitation?

Cities in the path of this winter storm system include Portland, Maine; White River Junction, Vermont; and Manchester, New Hampshire. While upstate New York and western Massachusetts should escape the snow, there is the chance that ice may hamper the Thursday morning commute. Other areas expected to see icy conditions include the higher elevations of the Adirondacks and the Green and White Mountains in Vermont and New Hampshire. The highest snow accumulations will be limited to northern Vermont and New Hampshire.

The major metropolitan areas of Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia are forecast to see straight rain with this system. For instance, the current forecast is calling for rain showers in New York City on Thursday morning.

Temperatures are expected to remain warm enough to keep the wintry moisture at bay in these cities along the Interstate 95 corridor. However, real feel readings will fall into the 20s and 30s in the overnight hours.

The end of the week will bring a drier weather pattern for the Northeast. Enjoy this weather while you can as another storm is predicted to move up from the lower Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains by the weekend.
