The US Warms Up after Central and Eastern Cold Fronts

Could the US see warmer temperatures soon? After several cold fronts across the Plains and the Midwest last week, meteorologists began forecasting a drastic change in weather. AccuWeather meteorologists are now predicting summer-like warmth, followed by colder, more seasonable temperatures.

Early October Cold Fronts Turn Warm

Last week, the central and eastern United States faced several cold fronts, some areas even seeing the first snowfall of winter. Now, a cool jet stream is starting to bring colder weather to parts of the West. This jet stream could bring warmer air to the central and eastern parts of the United States, giving residents a break from the unusually chilly weather.

Several areas experienced very low temperatures on Tuesday, October 18. Cities like Omaha, Nebraska recorded record low temperatures of 16 degrees and are expecting similar, chilly temperatures on Wednesday. Towards the end of the week and into the weekend, these cool temperatures could quickly rise. Omaha residents may see temperatures well into the 70s this week, possibly into the 80s. The area may even see a record-breaking high on October 23 if the temperature surpasses 84 degrees.

Other areas across the Plains and Mississippi Valley could see similar rises in temperature as the cooler air moves north and into Canada. Areas seeing temperatures in the 20s and 30s could begin to see temperature rises into the 50s as early as Thursday. Over the weekend, these temperatures could easily rise into the 70s.

How Warm Will the East Coast Get Next Week?

While the weather may be heating up in the Plains and Midwest, the East Coast might not see the same steep rises in temperature. A storm in the Atlantic could keep the eastern United States a bit cooler throughout the week. For example, areas such as New York City saw cold temperatures in the high 40s and 50s this past week, but may only see rises to the mid-60s later this week. Inland areas as far as Washington D.C. may experience similar patterns.

Incoming Atlantic Storms Keep New England Cool

While meteorologists are still forecasting slightly warmer weather in the eastern United States, the weather could change depending on the intensity of the nearby Atlantic storm. Stronger winds and rain from the storm could keep temperatures down by about 10 degrees. If the storm moves further away from the coast, the East may only see a few showers and a light breeze, allowing the area to warm up like the rest of the country.

How Long Will This Warm Weather Last?

Regardless of the storm in the Atlantic, forecasts are predicting several days of sun with little to no rain. The warm weather should continue to build over the course of the week. Once colder air returns to the West and begins to spread into the Plains and Midwest, it could bring severe thunderstorms to several areas that have experienced historically low water levels, such as the Mississippi River basin.
